Sebastian Cotofana, MD, PhD

Sebastian Cotofana, MD, PhD, PhD, is the founder and CEO of Cotofana Anatomy, a company dedicated to advancing anatomical education globally. He is recognized worldwide as a leading facial anatomist in the field of facial aesthetics. Dr. Cotofana is a Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and a member of the Department of Dermatology at Erasmus University Medical Center.

After earning his medical degree in Munich, Germany, and conducting advanced anatomic research as a senior postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Anatomy, Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg, Austria, he obtained dual Ph.D. degrees in Medical Sciences and Anatomy. He began his medical career with a residency in trauma surgery in Altoetting, Germany, in 2010, and later served as an Associate Professor of Anatomy at Ross University in Dominica.

In 2017, he joined Albany Medical College in New York as an Associate Professor of Anatomy and, in 2023, was appointed Full Professor of Anatomy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Prof. Cotofana has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and online communications. He holds four honorary professorships—at Queen Mary University in London, Pirogov University in Moscow, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital in China, and the University of Medical Sciences in San José, Costa Rica—as well as two visiting professorships at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, and the University of Belgrade in Serbia.
